Nineteenth-century poet Süleyman Fehim Efendi’s divan: Analysis, transcription, and index

Abstract

The subject of this thesis is the Dîvân, by Süleymân Fehîm Efendi, one of the poets who lived in 19th century. The main aim of this study is to give information about Süleymân Fehîm Efendi’s life and literary personality and then to present and analyse the Dîvân in terms of form and content. To achieve this goal, I first made a transcription by comparing the manuscript and the lithographic copy of the Dîvân. After a short introduction, I give some information about Süleymân Fehîm Efendi’s life, literary personality and works. Afterwards, I proceed with textual analysis, examining the Dîvân in terms of structure and verse forms, rhythm patterns, rhyme and repeated voices/words after rhyme have been identified. First, the poem’s language and characteristic expression form are examined as a part of a content analysis. Then, the reflections in the Dîvân of religious, sufistic, astrological, mythological and social elements and scholars are touched upon. In this context, I also study the properties of the lover and the beloved. In the final part, I give a description of the manuscript and the lithographic copy, detect mistakes of the copyist in the manuscript, explain the methodology I used in the transcription and I present an alphabetical index of all the special names mentioned in this manuscript. I also include a copy of the original manuscript and of the lithographic copy at the end of my study.
